- Start in 1501 and continuing until 1587, a pandemic outbreak of fever, headache, sweating and black tongue spreads through Europe. It is initially called Mobus Hungaricus (the Hungarian disease) but later will be regarded as an outbreak of typhus.

- German botanist Leonhart Fuchs is born in Wemding, Bavaria (d. 1566).
