[edit] The competition

There are 9 clubs and 7 reserve sides in the 1. līga. During the course of the season each club plays the others twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents, for a total of 30 games. At the end of the season, the highest placed non-reserve side is automatically promoted to Virslīga. The second lowest placed team in Virslīga and second team of 1. līga play two matches for a remaining place in the Virslīga the following season. The reserve teams are not eligible for promotion and are demoted in the event of their first team being relegated.
