[edit] External links

Please do not add commercial links (or links to your own private websites) to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or a mere collection of external links. You are, however, encouraged to add content instead of links to the encyclopedia. See the welcome page to learn more. Thanks. -Loren 01:56, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Ok, then take the other privet sites off the wikipedia, too.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.201.27.234 (talkcontribs).

Two wrongs do not make a right, simply because others have managed to add private links without getting caught does not mean that there is some obligation to host yours. Adding links without adding content is the very definition of linkspam. This is your second warning. -Loren 08:14, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Why do you allow external links at all then? Half the links on here were added by the owners of the site the link went to. Why don't you take those off, along with mine? What's wrong with mine, hu? Isn't it adding to the wikipedia?

My site actually relates the the pages I added links to. I know the name doesn't sound like it, but It actually relates to stargate. Why don't you go to it before assuming it is a spam site. http://www.addcontent.net/.

If I actually contribute to a page, can I add my link when I'm done?

You need to remove these links from the stargate page if your going to remove mine.

this is from the "what I can link to" page

Occasionally acceptable links For albums, movies, books: one or two links to professional reviews which express some sort of general sentiment. For films, Movie Review Query Engine, Internet Movie Database, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic offer especially large collections of reviews. Web directories: When deemed appropriate by those contributing to an article on Wikipedia, a link to one web directory listing can be added, with preference to open directories (if two are comparable and only one is open). If deemed unnecessary, or if no good directory listing exists, one should not be included. Fan sites: On articles about topics with many fansites, including a link to one major fansite is appropriate, marking the link as such. In extreme cases, a link to a web directory of fansites can replace this link. (Note: fanlistings are generally not informative and should not ordinarily be included.) Very large pages should be considered on a case-by-case basis. Worldwide, many use Wikipedia with a low-speed connection. Unusually large pages should be annotated as such. External sites can possibly violate copyright. Linking to copyrighted works is usually not a problem, as long as you have made a reasonable effort to determine that the page in question is not violating someone else's copyright. If it is, please do not link to the page. Whether such a link is contributory infringement is currently being debated in the courts, but in any case, linking to a page that illegally distributes someone else's work sheds a bad light on us (see Wikipedia:Copyrights and in particular Contributors' rights and obligations).

Addressing your points: First, linkspam is defined as any external link added for the purpose of promoting an external site. The external site need not be an advertisement. Adding numerous links to multiple pages withut adding content is by its very definition, linkspam. Please see How not to be a spammer. Accoding to Wikipedia:External links: Because of neutrality & point-of-view concerns, a primary policy of Wikipedia is that no one from a particular site/organization should post links to that organization/site etc. Because neutrality is such an important -- and difficult -- objective at Wikipedia, this takes precedence over other policies defining what should be linked. The accepted procedure is to post the proposed links in the Talk section of the article, and let other - neutral - Wikipedia editors decide whether or not it should be included. Again, just because no one managed to catch previous attempts at self-promotion does not mean that there is some obligation to host yours. There are many legitimate ways for you to promote your site, however Wikipedia is not one of them. -Loren 19:42, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

So how would you propose that I do? The wikipedia is the easiest way to get links. Am I allowed to post my url in the talk page?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.201.27.234 (talkcontribs).

If you really want your site to be included then yes, the accepted method of doing this is proposing it on the article talk page and explaining why you believe it to be a valuble addition to Wikipedia. If your primary motive of adding the link is simply the promotion of your site, then please reread Wikipedia:Spam. -Loren 23:10, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Comments.

Comments are to be placed at the end of a comment page; the quickest way to do this would be to use the "+" at the top of any comment page, making sure to sign your comment with "~~~~" at the end (so we all know who posted and when). Thanks. — Nathan (talk) 02:52, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
