"Already at the end of the twelfth century a fortification against the Wends was established on this spot. The town of Nykoebing grew up under the shelter of this fortification. From the end of the thirteenth century, and in the following hundreds of years, Danish kings often stayed at the castle and many important political decisions were made here. The castle which is shown on the drawing below was built in the period from 1588 to 1594 for Queen Sophie, King Frederik the Second's widow, and was one of the largest in the country. The ruin of what is left of the prison tower Father's Hat and is shown as No. 9 on the plan. "

This is the middle plank of three on a signpost outside Far's Hat commemorating the castle which once stood there.
