Île aux Marins (formally known as Île aux Chiens) is a ghost town and island located near the island of Saint-Pierre in the French overseas collectivity of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon in North America.

[edit] History

Île aux Marins was once a village of 700 inhabitants, mainly of Normand origins. The island was progressively abandoned in favour of Saint-Pierre as the fishing dories became motorized and the island of Saint-Pierre's infrastructure evolved with the widespread usage of electricity and telecommunications.

The last permanent inhabitant of île aux Marins was a Monsieur Patrice. The island has been a ghost town since the 1960s.

[edit] Geography

Île aux Marins is geologically similar to Saint-Pierre, and serves as a natural break-water for the harbour of Saint-Pierre. The island has an area of approximately 1,5 square kilometres.
