Æthelgar was Archbishop of Canterbury, and previously Bishop of Selsey.

Æthelgar was a monk at Glastonbury and then Abingdon until 964 when he was appointed Abbot of New Minster, Winchester [1].

He was consecrated Bishop of Selsey in 980 (Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, version C).

He succeeded Dunstan as Archbishop of Canterbury in 988, "but lived for a short time afterwards, no more than a year and three months" (Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, version E).
