From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Integrated circuit and computer chip manufacturers use logos to make an identifiable mark in advertising as well as labeling there chips. As time passes companies grow, merge, split, and change directions so company logos often change. Zilog has had 4 logos. Intel has had over 4 and also created logos for series's of chips.

[edit] Advertising
Logos give companies a way to distinguish tthemselves from other companies. They give the public a quick way to identify the company, and envision a slogan, personality, or emotion. Many ic manufactures logos are very similar. There are two main reasons for this. The first is they are allot ic manufacturers and there are only so many permutations of simple shapes. The other reason is too benefit from another company reputation, by making it hard to distinguish the two.
[edit] Chip Identification
Some ic's are too small to write the entire companies name, so a logo can take the place. For example old Intel chips were identified by a large lowercase 'i'. Larger chip often place the logo as well as the their name to make the chip stand out. As technology has improved the chip packages have gotten smaller. Many chip manufactures have forgone placing the company name and the logo to save space, just put the part number. The smallest chips such as SOT23 package and the SC70 package 3 or 4 letter identifier to show the version of the chip and do not even include the part number.
