Zug Island

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zug Island is an island in the city of River Rouge at the southern boundary with Detroit in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is at the mouth of the River Rouge where it spills into the Detroit River and is not a natural island, but was cut off by the digging of the Short Cut Canal along its southern edge for shipping. It is a heavily industrialized area and was part of the now bankrupt National Steel Corporation, until it was purchased, along with the rest of the Great Lakes Steel Works, by United States Steel. The island is home to the steel mill's iron-making facilities (the rest of the mill's facilities, primarily steel-making, are located at the main plant a couple miles south in the city of Ecorse) which include the blast furnaces and raw materials storage areas. Number 5 coke battery located there is now independently owned and operated by DTE Energy who gained it during the National Steel bankruptcy/US Steel takeover. Delray Connecting Railroad also owns some buildings and facilities on the island while a now-defunct small Honeywell chemical plant sits in shambles at the mainland end of the main (or "2-way") bridge to the island.

Cameras are prohibited on the premises, so pictures of the area itself (except from the outside) are rare.

There is a rock band called Zug Izland.
