Zt"l

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zt"l (zekher tzadik livrakha in Hebrew) is an appellation often appended to the name of a deceased rabbi or righteous person. It is pronounced "zatzal" and literally means, "The memory of the righteous is blessed".

It is used primarily in reference to rabbis who have been deceased in recent memory. Thus one is likely to say "Rabbi Moshe Feinstein Zt"l " (dec. 1986) but far less likely to speak of "Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin Zt"l " (dec. 1893).

Non-rabbinical figures more commonly receive the appellation Z"l (zikhrono/zikhrona livrakha), which means, "[may] his/her memory be blessed."
