[edit] History
The first Zombie Nation five track EP was released in the spring of 1999 on DJ Hell's label, International DeeJay Gigolo Records. The debut release contained the song "Kernkraft 400", which was based on part of David Whittaker's music from the 1984 Commodore 64 game Lazy Jones. A remix of that song landed in high chart-positions all over the world.
Since 2001, Florian Senfter has released tracks on different labels under his new pseudonym John Starlight. In 2002 he did not renew his contract with Gigolo Records and decided to start his own label, Dekathlon Records. In early 2005, the new sublabel UKW Records was launched with John Starlight's John's Addiction Part 1 followed by Paeng Paeng 12" by Zombie Nation which was recorded a few months later. Sven Väth realized the potential of that song at first glance and licensed it for Cocoon Records.
[edit] "Kernkraft 400"
The track "Kernkraft 400", specifically the Sport Chant Remix, is popular at North American sporting events, used by numerous arenas as their goal-celebration song, and many more as a motivational beat.
Many people believe the band to be named "Kernkraft 400" and the song to be "Zombie Nation". This is most likely due to multiple factors: the song chants "Zombie Nation," the band is a one-hit wonder in the United States and therefore not well known; the song could be said to sound like a nation of zombies chanting; and file sharing, where anyone can change the name of a file and thousands can download it in a short period of time, which became popular soon after the song was released.
A remix of this song was featured in Shaun of the Dead.
It is a pep band fight song for numerous schools, including University of Louisville, Wake Forest University, Penn State Nittany Lions, Colorado State University Rams and the Boston Red Sox. This song is also played before kickoff at Clemson University. Students from Penn State frequently modify the original version during football games to express their school pride as they chant, "We are Penn State" after the end of every chorus. Due to many students bouncing on the bleachers during this song, the local newspaper reported that administrators at PSU are phasing out the song in effort to stop students from breaking the seats. At Gonzaga University, it is the theme song for the "Kennel Club" student section and is played before tip-off at every game.
