I am a 16-year old junior at Torrance High and a relatively accomplished musician. As my junior year in high school approaches an end, I earnestly study psychology and hopes to attend an academic college studying Neuropsychology or a conservatory majoring in Composition.
[edit] A Musician
I started studying piano at the age of 6, when I attended cursory lessons given to me by a teacher reccomended by another one of my aunt's friends. Early on I developed the technical skills to play many pieces, but I was told that I didn't understand the music enough to play it well. By sixth grade I had become interested in classical pieces as a whole, and I begun to look into the repetoire given to pianists today, realizing that piano literature was a whole new world I hadn't even started venturing in to. In the fall of 2000, the Torrance PTA held its annual Reflections contest, in which you could compete nationally with other students of the same art; it just so happened one of the categories was Musical Composition. I wrote a small piece based on a commercial I had seen airing at that time, and I proceeded to win first place in both the school's and the district's competition (since then, I have won 1st place six times). After that I began to experiment more with the piano and its sonority.
By seventh grade, I took it upon myself to learn music by myself, for I was not taking lessons anymore for some reason. At the end of that school year I was able to navigate the ubiquitous Revolutionary Étude (Op.10 No.12) by Chopin, and I had looked further into the piano repetoire. My sophomore year in high school was a year of much productivity, assisted by the helpful criticism of the users from SquareSound forums.
Since then I have played in a small concert, received my Certificate of Merit with Honors and Convention eligibility, and am heading to the Southwestern Youth Musician Festival to compete against other pianists in California. I enjoy composing for others, but performance is a large part of my passion for music. I am doing well in my Music Theory seminar at school, but I'd rather just take on advice of what I have been doing lately, because I am satisfied with my works. I've composed several Études (for technical difficulty as well as melodic), Rhapsodies, and Fantasies, none of which have strict structure yet.
More recently, I was synthesizer head in the production of Little Shop of Horrors, a musical put on by our school's drama department. I am currently studying the Hungarian Rhapsodies, composed by Liszt, and several traditional Chinese songs arranged for concert piano by Jian-Zhong Wang.
[edit] A Scholar
My junior and high school careers have been progressing nicely, and thus far my high school GPA has maintained a steady 4.1, although a certain AP History class is devastating it as I speak.
