Zelienople is a borough in Butler County, Pennsylvania, 28 miles (45 km) north of Pittsburgh. The population was 4,123 at the 2000 census.

Zelienople is located at 40°47′31″N, 80°8′28″W (40.791905, -80.141049)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (1.84%) is water.

Zelienople (pronounced Zil ayen opel) was named for the eldest daughter of Baron Detmar Basse (1762-1836). Baron Basse purchased some 10,000 acres of property in the western side of Pennsylvania in 1802, planning the town and preparing to move Zelie and her younger brother to a new American home. At the time, Zelie was betrothed to Philipp Louis Passavant. Extensive preparations were made to establish their new home and town in America where they arrived in September 1807.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 4,123 people, 1,956 households, and 1,054 families residing in the borough. The population density was 747.4/km² (1,938.1/mi²). There were 2,113 housing units at an average density of 383.0/km² (993.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.91% White, 0.39% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.32% of the population.

There were 1,956 households out of which 22.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.1% were non-families. 41.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 25.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.07 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the borough the population was spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 23.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 84.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.3 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $140,250, and the median income for a family was $152,426. Males had a median income of $71,741 versus $71,083 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $123,555. About 0.2% of families and 0.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.4% of those under age 18 and 0.3% of those age 65 or over.

Zelienople boasts a good amount of recreation opportunities. Numerous golf courses and country clubs dot the landscape and offer exceptional year-round facilities. With Connequenessing Creek running through the center of town, this offers swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing opportunities for all. Nearby Hereford Manor Lake in Beaver County also offers fishing opportunities with an Upper and a Lower lake. These are prime spots for bass fishing and are regularly stocked with trout throughout the season.

In nearby state parks McConnell's mill, one can find numerous hiking, fishing, biking, rock climbing, and rappelling opportunities. In another park, Moraine State Park, one can also hike and fish on this large glacial lake formed where the glaciers stopped tens of thousands of years ago. This lake offers numerous opportunities for fishing species such as trouth, crappy, bass, and numerous pan fish as well as offering duck hunting opportunities.

In Zelienople, one can find Zelienople Park near the elementary school. This park includes a pool with lap lanes and two small waterslides in the 12 foot area of the pool. The park offers numerous baseball, softball, and tee-ball fields, tennis courts, pavilions for picnics, and many different playgrounds for the children. These are favorite spots in order to bring dogs and children and just enjoy the nice summer days.

In downtown Zelienople, one can have many different choices of places to eat. The Kaufman House is an historic and charming restaurant which served as an inn in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Chubby Chucks has become a favorite place for locals, as has the Kountry Kitchen known for their reasonable prices, quick service, and personable employees. Also, one can dine at Fishers Bar, The 3-B's bar, Nino's Tratoria, Thompson's Restaurant, and can grab a nice cup of coffee and gelato whil enjoying local musicians at Beecher's Coffee Shop on main street.

In July of every year, Zelienople hosts Horse Trading Days. This is a time for all the locals to gather and sell their arts and crafts as well as local bands to play for everyone to hear. There are square dancing competitions, banana split eating contests, and the Lil' Mister and Lil' Miss Horse Trading Days pageants. These 3 days in the middle of summer are always a welcome break for many of Zelienople's many residents.

[edit] Pizza Shops

There are numerous pizza shops located in Zelienople including L.J.'s, the Pizza and Sub Shop, Monte Celllos, Vocellis, and the almighty Police Station Pizza. Police Station Pizza is located on the North End of Zelinople and has, hands down, the best pizza in town. Police Station Pizza is located behind the new Subway location in Creekside Plaza. It opened in June 2006 and is surprisingly, still standing. Erratic owners Eric Gorius and Shawn Stewart keep the pizza shop alive and running. Also, exteremly friendly and attractive empolyees help the two hard working owners stay on their feet.
