Zano

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zano (also known as Tzazon?) (d. December 15, 533) was the brother of the Vandal King Gelimer.

When Godas, instigated by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian the Great, declared the island of Sardinia independent from Carthage king Gelimer sent Zano to repress the rebellion. This led to that the vandal forces left in Africa were greatly reduced when the Byzantine general Belisarius invaded, in the summer of 533.

Zano managed to regain control over Sardinia, but Gelimer had lost Africa and Carthago. After hearing the news of the loss of their capital city, Zano immediately set out to aid his brother. Together they made a second stand against the Byzantine invaders, but the battle of Ticameron proved to be disastrous for the vandals. Zano was killed, and the vandal forces either fled or surrendered. Gelimer himself fled, but realised soon that his position was hopeless and eventually gave himself up to the Emperor.
