Zachariah J. Loussac

Zachariah Joshua "Zack" Loussac was Mayor of Anchorage from 1948 to 1951.
Loussac, a Russian Jew, came to Alaska in 1907. In 1916, he opened a drugstore at Fourth Avenue and E Street in downtown Anchorage.
In 1948, he was elected Mayor of Anchorage. The same year, he married Ada Harper.
He retired from business in the 1950s, but established the Loussac Foundation, which helped to build the first Z.J. Loussac Public Library in Anchorage in 1954.
In 1952, he served as an Alaska Territory Delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Over time, he also served as President of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club and the Pioneers of Alaska.
In 1986, Anchorage opened a new three-story public library in midtown which was named the Z.J. Loussac Public Library. In 1989, Loussac was nominated to Alaska Business Monthly's "Alaska Business Hall of Fame".
