Location of Zacatecoluca in El Salvador

Zacatecoluca is a city in southern El Salvador and capital of the La Paz Department, located in the Lempa River valley. Zacatecoluca has a population of over 62,576 (2006 est.). The city is a commercial and manufacturing center, and it serves the surrounding agricultural area.

The city is home to the Catedral Santa Lucía, a monument to José Simeon Cañas, a priest who in 1824 successfully abolished slavery in Central America.

The city was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1922.
