The Z Class (also known as the Zeddie or Takapuna) was designed in Auckland by two yachties who lived on Northcote Point on Auckland's North Shore.

The Z Class originally had a gaff-rigged mainsail, no jib and a spinnaker which was sheeted around the front of the mast leading to many capsizes. This rule was changed in the interests of safety.

National competitions were sailed for the Sanders Cup.

In the 1990s there was an active fleet of Zeddies still sailing.
