Zélia Cardoso de Mello

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zélia Cardoso de Mello (b. September 20, 1953 in São Paulo) served as Brazil's Minister of Economy under Fernando Collor de Mello. In 1990, she began a romantic relationship with Justice Minister Bernardo Cabral, a married man nearly 20 years her senior. Both were ultimately removed from office by Collor.

At Ms. Cardoso's 37th birthday party, she danced cheek-to-cheek to the tune of "Besame Mucho" with the 58-year-old Mr. Cabral, who's at that time had been married for 35 years. The tryst became page-one news, and the respected daily Jornal do Brasil said that "what would be a banal love triangle has transformed itself in the current circumstances into fuel for a crisis."

She later married comedian Chico Anysio, with whom she had two children, Rodrigo and Vitória. The couple divorced in 1998.
