[edit] Name

  • He was born (and lived most of his time in Russia)
  • Felten and Velten have comparable numbers of google hits in context of (architect + Petersburg). Veldten + architect + Petersburgis 44 hits.

On the other hand, the native name is Veldten, although "Georg Friedrich Veldten" is barely on google radar.

Also it turns out "Felten" is quite popular "de-Germanization" of the name, beating "Veldten" by three orders of magnitude! 2,400,000: 775 Also, "Velten" as also about 2.4 mln hits. So I begin wondering whether "Veldten" is correct name at all. `'mikka (t) 20:50, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

BTW what is his original nationality?

  • "Veldt" is Dutch (German would be "Feld" (for "field")).
  • "Velten ist eine Stadt nördlich von Berlin".
  • Von Felten is a Swiss name

  • Speculating on his nationality by etymology of his name would be original research. I think we know he was born to non-native parents in Russia, but trained in Germany. It is possible that he adopted a German translation or spelling of his birth name while he was there. It is likewise possible that Velten was the family name, and changed to Veldten when they arrived in Russia. But anyway, to put any of that into the article we'd need a published source. --Dystopos 22:15, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
