Yun (Suikoden)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yun is a character from Suikoden III.
She is a girl from Alma Kinan who has a special power. Her power allows her to predict the future by talking to "spirits", invisible spirits of the dead. She and Yumi set off to the Chisha village because she knew the Harmonians would come and try to overtake the village. Combining this knowledge with the fact that she also knew that Chris Lightfellow was going to arrive soon, she headed to Chisha to meet her.
Once Chris arrived, Yun and Yumi managed to convince her to take them back to the Duck Clan's village, where Yun wished to find Caesar Silverberg and Apple to help in the village's defense. When they arrived back in Chisha, Harmonians attacked. With Chris's help, Yun and the villagers managed to hold off the Harmonian army until Hugo, who Apple had arranged to help, arrived with his reinforcements. Together, they saved Chisha.
Yun then asked Chris- somewhat ominously implying that it was her "second-to-last task"- to go to the Alma Kinan village with her and Yumi. In the Kuput Forest they encountered Yuber, beating him; he soon teleported away, leaving Chris and co. with some breathing room.
Upon entering the village, Chris met the clan leader, Yuiri. Chris soon finds out that there's a ritual for luck and aid that the Alma Kinans perform- and it involves human sacrifice. Yun's words about "second-to-last task" ringing in her head, Chris runs to find her, discovering that it is, indeed, Yun that the villagers are going to sacrifice. Chris interferes, and though Nash, Yuiri, and the whole of the Alma Kinan village are against her, she is determined to stop the ritual. At this point, Yun intercedes.
Yun takes Chris to the side, and tells her that she isn't worried- this is her destiny. While Chris frets and fumes over the stupidity and futility of being sacrificed for some "superstitious" practice, Yun tells her that she is "serious but kind", and that while Yun has only known Chris personally for a short time, she's been seeing her in her dreams since she was a child. This makes her think of Chris as almost an old friend. Yun's words strike a chord in Chris, and though she still disapproves of the ritual, she is interrupted in her musings by Yuber's assault- the swordsman has returned, along with the Masked Bishop and Sara. A fight starts, and though Chris and her party are defeated, Yun manages to finish the ritual by herself, sacrificing her very spirit to ensure that the True Water Rune Seal stayed safe.
In story terms, Yun is one of the most important characters in Suikoden III; whereas Lulu was Hugo's motivation to start a quest that ended in finding the Flame Champion, in Chris' story, no such motivation was present until Yun came along. Yun speaking of Chris' "destiny" and words about herself led Chris, already disgusted with being the "White Maiden" and "Silver Hero", to trust her own heart, leading her to find the Flame Champion in an attempt to find her own father.
Yun is also a very sad character; doomed to die from birth, given visions of the future, her revelation to Chris that she thinks of her as an "old friend" is heartbreaking, and often viewed as the scene that truly changes Chris as a character, from the "White Maiden" of Zexen to being a person in her own right.
