Ysgol Morgan Llwyd is a Welsh Medium school in Wrexham, North Wales. It is the only Welsh Language Secondary school in Wrexham County Borough. The school has been open at its present location, Caia Road, Wrexham, since 2000. Previously it was located on Percy Road, Wrexham. Its current headmaster is Mr. Huw Foster Evans. Deputy Headmasters of the school are Mr. Aneurin Roberts, Mr. Huw Robertson, and Mrs. Mary Griffiths.

Presently there are 6 houses or forms in which the approx. 800 pupils are divided into. These are Alun, Bers, Clywedog, Dyfrdwy, Erddig and Gwenfro. These are named after different areas of Wrexham and the area - the River Alun, Bersham Parish, River Clywedog, River Dee, Erddig Hall and River Gwenfro.

[edit] History of Ysgol Morgan Llwyd

Ysgol Morgan Llwyd opened in the 1960's, as the first Welsh Medium Secondary School in Wrexham. Originally on Percy Road, Wrexham, the school became popular and it's student population grew. In the 1990's a new home for the school was found - Cartrefle, the site of a College which had closed. Building work to expand it's facilities were carried out. In 2000 the school finally re-opened, with a grand caeremony. A nearby school sang for members of the council and First Minister of Wales Rhodri Morgan was also present. Ysgol Morgan Llwyd is now regarded as one of the most modern schools in Wrexham, with it's Laboratory facilities second to none.St. Christopher's High moved to the old site of Ysgol Morgan Llwyd.

The pupils of the Welsh primary schools of Wrexham are invited to come to Ysgol Morgan Llwyd. Other pupils from other schools can also join the school. These include:

  • Ysgol Bodhyfryd, Wrexham;
  • Ysgol Plas Coch, Wrexham;
  • Ysgol Min-Y-Ddol, Cefn;
  • Ysgol I.D. Hooson, Rhosllanerchrugog.

The ex pupils of these schools are largely the pupils of Ysgol Morgan Llwyd.

[edit] Activities and Sport

Ysgol Morgan Llwyd is proud to be part of many activities and sporting events in and around Wrexham. Year 7 pupils have the opportunity to visit Glan Llyn, an Urdd Gobaith Cymru owned Welsh Language camp. Years 10 to Year 13 (Sixth Form) can study for the Duke of Edinburgh award. All pupils have the opportunity to compete in Urdd events in the National Eisteddfod and the County Eisteddfod. Ysgol Morgan Llwyd has also made excursions to Germany, France, Czech Republic, America and Belgium on different occasions.

Previously the drama club Theatr y Draig was running in the school which produced many successful performances of "Grease" and "Blind Date". This year, applicants can take part in their production of "Busgy Malone". Every year a School Eisteddfod takes place, usually on St. David's Day. This is open for Years 7 - 10 and is a tradition in the school. Pupils participate in many competions that range from Form Choir, Garage/Kitchen band, to Whistling! A pupil is selected for the chair each year also.

Ysgol Morgan Llwyd pupils competes in sport - namely Rugby, Football and Netball, competing against the Wrexham schools. There is also a Tae Kwon Doe club participating in the Morgan Llwyd Sports Hall.

Ysgol Morgan Llwyd has had many success in different fields, namely in choirs and at sport. Its pupils have enjoyed singing, photographing and dancing in the Eisteddfod, and has produced many winners. Pupils have also ventured into other fields such as writing, instrument playing and sport, competing for the County or the Country.
