You Sexy Thing

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You Sexy Thing is a song by British group Hot Chocolate. It was written by Hot Chocolate lead singer Errol Brown and produced by Mickie Most. It reached number 2 in the British pop charts in 1975.

The song was originally a 1975 b-side. Not convinced that the song was a hit, producer Mickie Most put it on the flip of the Hot Chocolate 45 rpm single "Blue Night." The song was remixed at a later date by Most, who re-released it as an a-side some months later on his RAK Records label. The song was a massive hit.

At the time the song was written, there were some that thought the song should be banned or restricted, due to the relatively (for the time) frank exposition of the singer's praise and thanks for a woman who is willing to let him make love to her, as in the following lyrics from the song:

Now you're lying close to me / Making love to me.

and later,

Yesterday, I was one of the lonely people / Seeking love and affection / Now you're lying next to me / Giving it to me.
I believe in Miracles / Where you from / You sexy thing, you?

A 1987 remix by Ben Liebrand hit number 10. It was also covered by Deee-Lite in 1994. When it was featured in the movie The Full Monty in 1997, it went to number six in the charts. It is the only song to enter the British top ten in the seventies, eighties and nineties.

There were also two cover versions both released at almost the same time as 1997 re-issue of the hot chocolate original. So for 1 week the UK top 75 boasted 3 versions of song. The one cover was by pop/dance act Clock and the other 'similar' version was by T-Shirt. Both were re-workings with the original music/lyrics but with new added additional rap/vocal segments.
