[edit] Plot synopsis
Stan and his friends are hanging out, when a group of kids from Orange County come and dance in front of them, thus "serving" them. The group of kids leaves after trash-talking Stan and the boys, who are left confused by the entire confrontation. Stan tells his dad, and Mr. Marsh gets upset that his son was served and tells Stan to dance, and the next time he gets "served," he "serves" them back---and of course, this means "it's on." This apparently means that there is now a dance contest to be played, the Orange County kids versus the best dancers in South Park. Mr. Marsh goes to the Orange County kids to apologize and make it clear that "it's not on." Instead, the Orange County coach takes this as a challenge and "serves" Mr. Marsh with exceptional dance moves. Mr. Marsh winds up in the hospital with the worst case of "being served" that the doctors have ever seen.
Stan goes out to find the town's best dancers; Ethan, from the Goth Kids' gang, an Asian kid, Yao, who is a Dance Dance Revolution expert ("I can't dance without the machine."), and Mercedes the Raisins girl. Needing a fifth member for the group, Mercedes suggests Butters, who was once state tap-dancing champion; however, when they ask him to join he runs away screaming, and it is revealed via flashback that two years previously, his shoe had flown off during the national Tap-Dancing Finals, hit a stage light in the rafters and led to an extremely gruesome chain of events that left 8 people in the audience dead (11 in total because one woman was pregnant, and two others committed suicide after the tragedy), all to the upbeat tune of I've Got Something in My Front Pocket For You . Butters flatly refuses to participate in the show, and instead the team has to settle for a dancing duck from a local farm.
However, the day of the performance the duck's leg gets injured during practice, and the team looks like it would be forced to forfeit without a fifth member. Just in time, Butters suddenly shows up in his tap-dancing outfit, and the kids are able to perform. However, when they do, Butters' shoe flies off again, hits a stage light...and the whole rafter falls, killing the entire Orange County team and their coach. Though Butters is horrified by this, the South Park team wins by default, and a blood-stained, screaming Butters is carried off and hailed as a hero.
[edit] Trivia
- This episode lampoons the derided 2004 movie, You Got Served, as well as elements of Save the Last Dance and 8 Mile. According to the audio commentary, South Park co-creator Matt Stone met Served producer Billy Pollina at a bar after this episode aired, saying he loved the spoof.
- In the original airing, the hat that one of the Orange County kids wears has "Lil Shiit" written across it. At next broadcast, the hat was changed to "Lil Sheep." All subsequent airings have the hat read "Lil Sheep."
- When Jimbo, Mr. Garrison, Ned and Mr. Mackey celebrated in the crowd, you can see an alien from Cartman Gets an Anal Probe in there.
- "I've Something in My Front Pocket For You" bears a striking resemblance to a song that Steve Martin sings in the film The Jerk.
- Because of the vulgar title, this episode is often shortened to "You Got..." or retitled "You Got Served" in more family friendly media, such as on TV Guide and on cable listings.
[edit] References to pop culture
- The way people died in this episode was similar to: Carrie, Final Destination, Ghost Ship and Saving Private Ryan.
- The song that Butters danced to at the national Tap-Dancing Finals is I’ve Got Something In My Front Pocket For You, a rather sexual number implying an erection. In addition, this song was played over the closing credits of the episode. This song is a pastiche of the Harry Warren song "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me" and appears in the movie 42nd Street.
- Raunchy rapper Lil Kim makes an appearance in this episode as a miniature parody of herself. Her one line is "Wassup Niggas!"
- The episode also sends up the early Warner Brothers movie 42nd Street. The duck spraining its ankle and being unable to go on parodies the plotline of that movie, in which the leading lady is replaced by the unknown.
- The song Randy teaches Stan dancing to is Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart".
- The episode makes reference to Charles Whitman and the Texas clock tower massacre, when Butters is informed that one of the women killed in the accident was pregnant, and two of the survivors later committed suicide.
- Eminem's Lose Yourself plays for a few seconds in the hospital scene with Stan and his father.
