Proposal 1: Shopping Malls and Arcades ("malls") are integral to the socio-economic fabric of their locales. As such, all indoor shopping malls past or present are notable and may have individual articles. We draw the line at indoor malls - strip malls, outdoor outlet mall complexes, and clusters of stores are not notable per se, unless their notability is established under other criteria.
Proposal 2: While malls are integral to the socio-economic fabric of their locales, not many malls are notable, and not every mall deserves an article. In order to be notable, a mall must possess at least one of the following criteria:
-The mall is the first, largest, etc. in a state or province or similar political subdivision,
-a minimum of X (what would be a good number?) stores, or
-The mall was the site of a significant event (crime, filming of a movie/tv show/music video).
Proposal 3: While the concept of a mall is notable, individual manifestations are not. Only malls of national or historical importance, such as the Mall of America, should have their own articles. If an important event take place in a mall, the information should be contained in the article dedicated to the specific event. For any other mall, the information, if any, may be included in the article about its geographical locale or the area's economy.

- can we get a sense if other countries have their malls listed or if this a peculiarly american disease? - the.crazy.russian (T) (C) (E)
- Maybe this discussion should be limited to indoor shopping malls (not strip malls). Also, I know that there are similar shopping malls (if not articles) in France and the UK. The mall I used to shop at in Cambridge was opened by the friggin' QUEEN OF ENGLAND! I am used to US malls being opened by one of the Dukes of Hazzard or a some up-and-coming Radio Disney musician/twerp. youngamerican (talk) 19:20, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- I tend to think that it should either be 1 or 3. I don't like the half-assed criteria. I personally lean towards option 1, but would rather one similar to 3 over something with arbitrary, pulled-out-of-our-asses criteria, like 2. youngamerican (talk) 20:13, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hmmm, it's only your ass, buddy. :) My ass is not in the habit of producing arbitrary criteria. But yeah, I agree. Stricken. - the.crazy.russian (T) (C) (E) 23:00, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

- Ummm, ok. I was trying to create a middle-of-the road proposal, not one I agree with personally. Just wait til this is put up for discussion or a poll, then you will see some arbitrary shit fly. I was just trying to cut it off at the pass. Even though neither of us like the fence-riding position, there ahould be an as good as possible, even if it is arbitrary, middle of the road proposal that seeks to quantify what shouldnt be quantified (and some of it is going to have to come out of your ass, too lol). youngamerican (talk) 01:28, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- Long and short of it: we may have to come up with dumb rules to prevent more AfD mall madness. youngamerican (talk) 01:45, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

- Easy. Let's present them with these two proposals, and offer them to draft middle of the road inclusion criteria themselves. We can say we attempted to and found all the options arbitrary and stupid. - the.crazy.russian (T) (C) (E) 02:20, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- To be honest, I am not sure which one - 1 or 3 (not 2, which is marked-through anyway) - is the best one at this time. I will say this, however - we need some clear notability guidelines for malls so that the various mall articles on AfD can be dealt with easier. --WCQuidditch ☎ ✎ 23:09, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
- For what it's worth, I live in Ithaca, New York and the indoor mall here sucks. It doesn't seem like the sort of place that belongs in Wikipedia. I've been to an outdoor mall that's much more significant. I think it might be a little arbitrary to use the indoor/outdoor distinction as an important, even if indoor malls are generally larger and more economically important in there communities (if arbitrariness is the main worry here).
