Yoshi's Cookie is a computer puzzle game made for the Famicom (Nintendo Entertainment System), Game Boy and Super Nintendo. The point of the game is for Mario, Yoshi, Princess Peach, and Bowser to mix and match the cookies in the cookie factory.
[edit] Info
This game was originally developed by Bullet Proof Software under the name Hermetica [1] and published by Nintendo in 1992, 1993, and 1994. In 1992 the game was released for Famicom and Game Boy in Japan. In 1993 the game was released for Super Famicom in Japan and for NES, SNES, and Game Boy in the United States. The game was released the following year in Europe. Some fans consider the 8-Bit NES/Famicom version to be superior to the 16-Bit version because it has fewer frames of animation and more responsive controls, but others say that the extra features are worthwhile in the SNES version.
Yoshi's Cookie was also available on the Nintendo Nintendo GameCube game Nintendo Puzzle Collection, featured along with Dr. Mario and Panel de Pon (aka Tetris Attack, Pokémon Puzzle League or Puzzle League overseas), which was only released in Japan.
An interesting fact to note about the SNES version of Yoshi's Cookie is that it's where Yoshi got his 'new' look. This 'new' Yoshi features a bigger head and shorter neck. This appearance was next seen in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story.
Yoshi's Cookie is also a backdrop for Puzzle Mode in Tetris DS.
[edit] Trivia
- The Super NES version of Yoshi's Cookie may have been the first game to have Yoshi speak in "Yoshi" language (being able to only say his name), rather than making his original "whee-woo" noise. Because this game was developed by Bullet Proof Software, and not Nintendo itself, this idea wasn't carried on until Yoshi's Story.
- In the Super NES version, after defeating all 4 characters in V.S. mode, a scene with the same 4 characters appear in different color palettes, stating that "the challenge has just begun".
- After Yoshi's Cookie, the idea of Yoshi eating cookies has been used in other games as well, such as Super Mario RPG, but this concept was overshadowed by Yoshi's love of fruit, and had not been seen again until Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.
- The Super NES version of Yoshi's Cookie reused some of the sprites (namely Mario's) and backgrounds from Super Mario World.
- In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, one of the battle stages is called "Cookie Land".
- In Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, the song Fishing Frenzy is based on Yoshi's Cookie.
- In Tetris DS, Puzzle Mode features a Yoshi's Cookie backdrop.
- The game Pokemon Trozei, is said to be a game that uses similar elements.
