Live on Two Legs (1998) |
Yield is Pearl Jam's fifth album, released on February 3, 1998. Overall, Yield resembles the straight-ahead rock approach of the band's early work. Some observers suggest that members of the band had become frustrated with Vedder's control of the creation process and that this album was a true collaboration between all members of the group. Yield sold 358,000 copies during its first week of release, and eventually outsold its idiosyncratic predecessor No Code.
The album was inspired by Daniel Quinn's novel Ishmael, Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita, and the writings of Charles Bukowski, amongst others.

[edit] Miscellanea
- The album title is rooted in the idea of "yielding to nature", a theme central to Daniel Quinn's novel Ishmael.
- The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Record Packaging in 1999.
- The documentary Single Video Theory details the making of the album.
- There is a yield sign hidden in every picture in the booklet. [1]
- "Given to Fly" heavily borrows the main guitar riff and the vocal melody from Led Zeppelin's "Going To California."
- "Push Me, Pull Me" contains a sample of "Happy When I'm Crying," a song written by Jack Irons and released on Pearl Jam's 1997 Ten Club Christmas single.
- "MFC" stands for "Mini Fast Car". Eddie was inspired by the small automobiles in Rome.
- "Brain of J." dates back to at least 1995. It was played live twice in November of that year.
- This was the last Pearl Jam album to be commercially released in the U.S. on cassette. The cover of the cassette has slightly different artwork, moving the Yield sign from the right of the road to the left side and reversing the picture of the road.
- The music video for "Do the Evolution" was directed and illustrated by comic artist Todd MacFarlane.
