Ygnite
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ygnite.org was founded in 2003 by a group of like-minded youths with the intent of empowering Singaporean youths to “be the change that they want to see in the world”. By means of an online calendar that housed listings of various youth-related events to the end of volunteer opportunities, arts events, competitions, camps, and most importantly, youth-led initiatives, Ygnite.org has not only raised the awareness and active participation of young people to on-goings in the youth scene, it has also spurred the success of several youth-led projects by providing free publicity and advertisement.
The idea of creating a common platform for event organizers and youths came from a non-profit organization in the United States – TakingItGlobal.org, which runs on a similar concept except that it serves to connect youth leaders and opportunities on a global scale. Running entirely on the professionalism and dedication of its founding members, Ygnite.org has since taken shape and grown from strength to strength. Today, it receives an average of 10, 000 unique web visitors each month with the numbers typically spiking during the vacation periods. Notable events posted include fund-raisers for the Tsunami disaster relief, the National Monopoly championship, DJ workshops and even a random post requesting for interested soccer players to meet for a friendly play-off.
The project is partnered by Heartware-Network (a local non-profit NGO), and supported by the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Council. Sustainability is crucial to the long-term success of any project. Ygnite.org undergoes a leadership renewal every year, and 2005/6 will see the 3rd batch of Ygnite.org volunteers rising to the challenge, with the experience backing of the project’s 15-member strong alumni connection.
