Yeshivat Ma’alot

Yeshivat Ma'alot Ya'akov (Hebrew: ישיבת מעלות יעקב) is a Hesder Yeshiva located in the town of Ma'alot-Tarshiha in the Western Galilee. Yeshivat Ma’alot is also one of few Bnei Akiva Hesder Yeshivot. The Yeshiva is named after Rabbi Dr. Ya'akov Hertzog son of the late Chief Rabbi of Israel Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog and brother of the late President of Israel Chaim Herzog. Rabbi Yehoshua Weitzman is the head of the yeshiva (Rosh Yeshiva). Yeshivat Ma’alot was founded in 1975 after the Ma'alot massacre.
There are over 300 students in the yeshiva including young Kollel Students. As part of the Hesder program the students in Yeshivat Ma'alot serve in the IDF mainly in combat units. Overseas students from English speaking countries learn in Yeshivat Ma’alot's overseas program headed by Rabbi Ilan Goldman.
Yeshivat Ma'alot is a religious Zionist yeshiva that emphasizes learning Torat Eretz Yisrael according to Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook’s teachings. The Hebrew Wikipedia divides the Hesder Yeshivot into four groups one of four groups is the Yeshivot of Torat Eretz Yisrael, Yeshivat Ma’alot and it’s branches.
Yeshivat Ma'alot has founded four branches headed by Rabbi Yehoshua Weitzman’s Students:
- Yeshivat Hesder Neve Dekalim, headed by Rabbi David Gavrieli. The Yeshiva was evacuated during the disengagement from the Gaza Strip during the summer of 2005 and is to be relocated to Ashdod.
- Yeshivat Netiv Tefachot, headed by his son, Rabbi Avigdor Weitzman and Rabbi Eyal Griner.
- Yeshivat Hesder Acre, headed by his son-in-law Rabbi Yossef Shteren.
- Yeshivat Hesder Holon, headed by son-in-law Rabbi Elazar Aharonson.
