Yeoville, Gauteng

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yeoville is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is located in Region 8. During apartheid, it was classified as white-only and mostly inhabited by young professionals. Following the end of apartheid it entered a period of rapid urban decay and neglect, caused in part, by white flight.

This does not even begin to do justice to Yeoville. Located next door to Hillbrow and Berea, but having more family-oriented housing, it was one of the earliest of Johannesburg suburbs to become desegregated (in practice, if not in law). In the late eighties and nineties, Rockey Street was a hotbed of radicals, activists, artists and musicians. Journalists from around the world lived and worked there during the transition, and places like the Harbour Cafe, Coffee Society, Tandoor and many otheres attracted large numbers of visitors.
