Yemane Ghebremichael

Yemane Ghebremichael (commonly known as Yemane Baria), was arguably the best Eritrean song writer, composer, singer. Yemane talents went beyond music and the arts, he was also a political hero.

Yemane's songs and music reflected the Eritrean exprience during the Struggle era (1961-1991). Eritreans all over the world listened to Yemane's songs, about love, journey, hope, immigraiton, and liberation. A few years after Eritrea's liberation Yemane moved to Asmara and continued to release albums that reflected the new era of hope and national prosperity with a mix of African and Latin melodies. He also sang about Eritrea's heroes and the sacrifices paid for liberation. In addition, Yemane was also known as the 'Eritrean caretaker' for his overly generous nature, and down to earth personalities and for sharing his place with newly arrived Eritreans. He is known to having helped many Eritreans adjust to diaspora life in Sudan and move to better places in the Middle East, America, Europe, etc. He was known for his deep sense of artistry and mastery of Tigrinya, the most widely used Eritrean language like no one else. He had as distinict talent of assembling words to describe events, beauty, struggle, love, etc. Yemane's albums include, Zemen, Meskerem, Nasenet, etc.
He died of natural causes in 1997.
