The river's name is a translation of Dakota name "pajutazee," ("huta" meaning "root," "zi" meaning "yellow," and "kapi" meaning "they dig.") The Dakota dug the yellow root of the moonseed plant for medicinal purposes. The name is also used by one of the counties through which the river flows.
