Yankeeography
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yankeeography is a biography style television program that chronicles the lives and careers of the players, coaches, and other notable personnel associated with the New York Yankees Major League Baseball team. The series is aired on the YES Network and is produced by MLB Productions [1]. The series is hosted by Yankees radio personality John Sterling. The series has earned five New York Sports Emmy Awards since its inception. In addition to airing on YES, MLB productions has packaged numerous episodes on DVD boxed sets.
After debuting as a weekly show with the 2002 launch of YES, Yankeeography only debuts new episodes periodically, with only four airing in 2006: Tino Martinez, David Cone, the Yankees' 1996 World Series team, and Casey Stengel. All Yankees with retired numbers have had shows completed with the exception of Bill Dickey. The show has been critcized for producing episodes on players who remain active. Roger Clemens is the only Yankeeography recipient who went to play for another team after his episode aired. Another criticism of the show was Bernie Williams yankeeography, which many thought didnt give him enough credit for his postseason heroics.

[edit] Notable Yankees figures as yet unfeatured
[edit] Hall of Fame and Monument Park
The following Yankees figures have been honored either with election to the Hall of Fame (due in some part to their performance with the Yankees), enshrinement in Monument Park, or both, but have not been the subject of a Yankeeography through the 2006 season:
- Mel Allen
- Ed Barrow
- Wade Boggs
- Earle Combs
- Bill Dickey
- Lefty Gomez
- Miller Huggins
- Tony Lazzeri
- Joe McCarthy
- Johnny Mize
- Allie Reynolds
- Red Ruffing
- Jacob Ruppert
- Bob Sheppard
- Enos Slaughter
- George Weiss
- Dave Winfield
In the cases of Barrow, Combs, Dickey, Huggins, Gomez, Lazzeri, McCarthy, Ruppert and Weiss, it is probably due to the lack of film footage available due to the times in which they operated. In the cases of Barrow, Ruppert and Weiss, it may also be due to the fact that, as owners and executives, they did not have the same level of popularity as the players.
[edit] Others
Other former Yankees who played largely in the age of television, who would thus have significant film footage available, including some who have given extensive interviews for other figures' Yankeeographies, include:
- Clete Boyer
- Chris Chambliss
- Jerry Coleman
- Bucky Dent
- Joe Girardi
- Ralph Houk
- Tommy John
- Jimmy Key
- Tony Kubek
- Gene Michael
- Joe Pepitone
- Andy Pettitte
- Bobby Richardson
- Dave Righetti
- Buck Showalter
- Moose Skowron
- Mel Stottlemyre
