[edit] History

The Xunta de Galicia has its origin in the Xunta of the Kingdom of Galicia active between 1528 and 1833.

During the Peninsular War in 1808, the Xunta Suprema de Galicia directed the war against the French invaders and maintained the public order. This Xunta Suprema was in charge of military, legislative, and international relations functions until the establishment of the Xunta Central Española.

In 1843 the Xunta Central de Galicia was created and presided over by Xosé Maria Suances

In 1846 the commander Solís started a rebelion in Lugo. He closed the previous Provincial Council and created the Xunta Superior do Goberno de Galicia, presided over by Pio Rodríguez Terrazo. His rebelion was put down and the Mártires de Carral were killed.

Finally, on March 16, 1978, the Galician Statute of Autonomy in the 1978 Spanish Constitution allowed for the creation of the current Xunta de Galicia.
