Xtreme Radio is the official name for the radio station run by Swansea University Students' Union. The station broadcasts from Union House on the University campus. The station is 38 years old this year, making it one of the longest established student radio stations in the UK. Prior to becoming Xtreme Radio, the station had three previous names - Action Radio, URA and C-Air.
In May 2005 Xtreme Radio was awarded the title of 'Most Improved' society by the Students Union. On 13th May 2006 the society improved on its awards tally by winning 'Best Website', 'Most Innovative' and the main award, 'Best Society'.
The main use of Xtreme is as a communication medium for students at Swansea University, and also to provide experience of the many areas of radio broadcasting for those who are involved.
For 2006/7 Xtreme will be looking for more people to join the society, particularly those interested in news and sports reporting, music and gig reviews, station publicity and other off-air roles, as well as presenters for music and speech based programmes.

Xtreme is run by an Executive elected by members of the Xtreme Radio Society. The current executive, elected in May 2006, consists of:

[edit] Xtreme Radio Schedule
Xtreme currently broadcasts programmes between 8am and Midnight seven days a week, with non-stop music on air at all other times. Daytime shows are generally more mainstream that those after 6pm, usually relying on new tracks from better known artists, alongside recent student favourites and songs by local bands and artists from across South Wales.
Xtreme's evening shows play the majority of their tracks from the DJs particular specialised genres, including programmes focussing on US Alternative, Electro, Punk, Metal, Hip-Hop, Dance, Drum 'n' Bass, Bhangra, Unsigned and Experimental Music, amongst others.
Xtreme also broadcasts several speech-based programmes, including a weekly late-night chat show, a Sunday news round-up programme focussing on the weeks big student stories, and two hours of Welsh-language programming on Sunday evenings. Xtreme also covers campus, local and national sports news and results on its two sports shows, Saturday afternoon's 'The Dugout' and its new Sunday spin-off show 'The Dugout Xtra'.

[edit] Technical Information
There are two Studios at Xtreme Radio. Studio 1 is used as the main Studio for live broadcasting, but can also be used for Production during off air periods if needed. Studio 2 is mainly used as a Production and Recording Studio, as well as being the home of new playlist additions from the Station's two Heads of Music. Studio 2 can also be put live on-air in case of any problems with Studio 1 or as needs dictate, such as during periods of maintenance work.
The loft area contains the Audio Distribution and Processing units. The on-air feed is distributed via a Band I link transmitter on 52.925 MHz to the main 1431 kHz transmitter, located a couple of miles from campus at the Hendrefoilan Student Village, as well as streaming to the Internet. The station feed is also distributed via the Union House speakers to areas around campus, such as the offices of Waterfront and Ents, the Computer Rooms, Level 2 Shop, the Green Room, Cafe West and the Refectory (Angels Food Mall) in Fulton House.
A variety of music formats are used at the Station. These include computer playout in the form of digital files, CDs, Minidisc and, on rare occasions, even Cassette.
The Station is partly powered by state-of-the-art Computer Systems, enabling Automated Playout, logging of audio and events, webcam images, and remote maintenance.
