Xinyi District (信義區; Tongyong: Sinyi; Wade-Giles: Hsin-yi) is the seat of the Taipei mayor's office and the Taipei city council. The Taipei Convention Hall, the Taipei World Trade Center, the Taipei 101 (and its mall), various shopping malls, and a Warner Village Movie Theater make Xinyi the most modern cosmopolitan district of Taipei. The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is also in the district.
There is the New York New York shopping plaza, which is primarily for foreign fashions. The area also has many world-renowned luxury boutiques, including Chanel, Christian Dior, Miu Miu, Gucci, and others. The shopping district also has less expensive retailers attracting the younger population, including Ralph Lauren, Armani Exchange, and many more. Starbucks, a branch of Mr. Donut and McDonald's are also located in the district. In addition, the largest branch of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store, which has four buildings in the district, is also in Hsin Yi district.
The flagship Eslite Bookstore/Shopping Mall (like eslite 119 in Ximending) recently opened on January 1, 2006 in the building that was to be home to Takashimaya Department Store, which will not be coming afterall. Besides the giant bookstore (7 stories), there are restaurants like Ruby Tuesday, TGI Friday, and Romano's Macaroni Grill in the NEO 19 complex. Also, the annual Taipei Pop Music Festival is held in front of the City Hall, on the opposite side of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store on Song Kao Road facing Jen Ai Road. Artists including Avril Lavigne, SE7EN and The Caesars have attended in the past, along with local artists like S.H.E, Jay Chou, and Cyndi Wang.
Much of the district use to be wetlands, explaining the abundance of space for construction projects as this was one of the last places in Taipei to be developed.
The area is served by the MRT (Taipei Metro) City Hall Station and Yongchun Station.
The placename means "Honesty".
