[edit] International Muffin Crisis

On November 1, 2004, xcriteria learned that Hospitality Club member Valmi wanted to make chocolate-oatmeal American muffins, but could not afford chocolate chips. After some brief political strategizing, xcriteria devised an ad hoc free market social welfare plan to support Valmi's cooking project, which involved a transfer of $1.95 United States dollars from a PayPal account to Valmi. (Why only $1.95 and no more? It would have taken 3-4 days to transfer funds not already in the PayPal account.) Unfortunately, PayPal charges a $0.50 withdrawal fee to Canadian users. In the end, the transaction was deemed unacceptable and Valmi refunded the donation.

Valmi proceeded to up the ante with the statement "i'd love to have what i still miss to pay my rent this month, that's about $60 :-)" -- providing a concrete example of poverty (or at least a personal budget deficit) in Quebec's largest city. This statement aroused xcriteria's desire to pitch in, eventually triggering xcriteria's inner conflict over personal productivity and the efficient utilization of available resources. Fortunately, Valmi collected his paycheck and was able to pay his rent with no further action by xcriteria.
