In this group of articles, the surname-first convention of writing Japanese names and modified Hepburn romanization for names and phrases of Japanese origin are used. Hiragana is employed for the furigana of characters' names. Under the Name Analysis sections, hiragana is employed as furigana for the Kun pronunciation of kanji, and katakana is employed as furigana for the On pronunciation of kanji.

[edit] Princess Hinoto

(ひのと) (ひめ)

A yumemi (dreamseer) in the employ of the Japanese government residing in the basement of the Japanese Diet Building. She is blind, deaf, mute, lame, and must communicate telepathically, but her dreams have never failed to come true. She foresees the battle between the Dragons of Heaven and Earth and the advent of Kamui, but cannot determine which path he will choose. Either way, she foresees that the Dragons of Heaven will lose, but conceals this from them. For a time, she is possessed by her dark half, which causes a disastrous battle to occur within Hinoto's own consciousness (played out on the dreamscape), as well as many complications for the Ten no Ryū.

The rationale for Hinoto's dark half attempting to destroy Kamui and the other Ten no Ryū seems to stem from the fact that she foresaw her own death at the hands of Kamui. While Hinoto's good side seems to desire this outcome (either for the simple fact that she wishes to be freed from her duties as a dreamseer, or possibly in that her death could somehow alter the future in favor of the Dragons of Heaven), her evil side is striving to prevent her own death at the expense of the lives of others, and to this end repeatedly attacks the Dragons of Heaven with swarms of shikigami resembling "Men in Black".

In the anime, she kills herself in the dreamscape (thusly taking her life in the waking world as well) so as to end her possession and save Kamui. This precipitates the Final Battle.

In the manga, she is still alive, but her evil persona has kept her good persona trapped in the dreamscape and continues to set up the Dragons of Heaven in hopes of bringing their deaths. Kamui suspects her of foul play and relies this to Sorata, who created a shikigami to observe her and has last been seen confronting her for her actions.

  • Power: yumemi (dreamseer): can forecast future events through the dreamscape, can also communicate with other dreamseers, strong telepath, can send out multiple shikigami
  • Relatives: Kanoe (sister)
  • Romantic interests: Saiki Daisuke
  • X Tarot Card: The High Priestess (Volume 2)

[edit] Sōhi and Hien

(そう) (), () (えん)

A pair of twin girls whose family has served Hinoto for generations as her guardians. They refer to Hinoto as Hime-sama ("Princess"). Speculation abounds as to whether Sōhi and Hien are actually shikigami of Hinoto, or if they are instead the daughters of her previous attendants, though in the anime version they are explicitly shown to be the former when Hinoto dies.

Sōhi and Hien appear in CLAMP's crossover work, Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE as the swords that Syaoran and Kurogane obtain in Ōto no Kuni.

  • Power: unknown
  • Relatives: Names Unknown (parents; presumably deceased, possibly nonexistent), each other (sister)
  • Romantic interests: unknown

[edit] Saiki Daisuke

(さい) (), (だい) (すけ)

Saiki, as depicted in the anime

Saiki, as depicted in the anime

Seiichirō's nephew and also a wind magician, though not of Seiichirō's calibre. Saiki and Kamui do not get along very well, with Saiki not completely convinced that Kamui is the one humanity's fate rests with, but later they learn to get along. Saiki lives to protect Hinoto, whom he seems to have affections for. He was decapitated by Fūma while protecting Hinoto.

Daisuke makes an appearance in CLAMP's crossover work, Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE.

  • Power: kazetsukai (wind master): controlling air currents, slicing through solids and liquids with wind
  • Relatives: Aoki Seiichirō (uncle), Aoki Shimako (aunt), Aoki Yūka (cousin)
  • Romantic interests: Hinoto

[edit] Monō Kotori

(もの) (), () (とり)

Kotori, as depicted in the anime

Kotori, as depicted in the anime

Fūma's younger sister. Like him, she was Kamui's very close childhood friend. A delicate child with a congenital heart condition, she was developing her power as yumemi (dreamseer) when she is killed by Fūma. Hinoto tells Kamui that she was destined to die, no matter which side Kamui chose; either way, the one who ended up as a Dragon of Earth would have killed her. Her spirit stays with Kakyō for a time, to encourage and thank him, telling him that the future has not been determined yet.

  • Power: yumemi (dreamseer): can forecast future events through the dreamscape, can also communicate with other dreamseers; can talk to animals and plants
  • Relatives: Monō Kyōgo (father), Monō Saya (mother;deceased), Monō Fūma (brother)
  • Romantic interests: Shirō Kamui
  • X Tarot Card: The Lovers (Volume 6)

[edit] Monō Saya

(もの) (), () ()

Kotori and Fūma's mother. When they were children, she died giving birth to the first Shinken (Divine Sword), which burst forth from her body. This sword is intended to be wielded by Kamui; instead, it is stolen by Nataku and taken by Fūma. It is later revealed that Saya married Kyōgo only to be at the Togakushi Shrine to take the place of her true love, Magami Tōru, as the vessel of the Shinken. Kyōgo knows that Saya never loved him romantically, but, regardless, continues to love her.

[edit] Shirō Tōru / Magami Tōru

() (ろう) (とお) () / () (がみ) (とお) ()

Kamui's mother and kage-nie, as one of the Magami clan. Tōru burns along with the house that she and Kamui lived in while on Okinawa. It is alternately implied that she died either to postpone or alleviate the disasters that would befall Kamui in the time leading up to the promised day (thus acting as his kage-nie) or as a sacrifice to prevent the premature destruction of the planet itself. Hinoto attributes Tōru's fiery death to the concentrated effect that global warming was having on the Earth.

Originally, she was supposed to give birth to the first Shinken, but Saya took her place. Tōru was personally in contact with the former Rijichō of CLAMP Campus—indeed, Tōru was just ending a phone call with her when the effects of acting as kage-nie of Kamui/the Earth were set into motion, igniting her flesh.

Tōru's death occurs just prior to the beginning of the first volume of the manga (chronologically) and is what causes Kamui to return to Tōkyō after a six year absence.

  • Power: kage-nie (shadow sacrifice): can protect others by acting as a shield to them from physical or even spiritual damage; (presumably) kotodama (power of words): can command others to irresistibly obey her through her words
  • Relatives: Magami Tokiko (sister), Shirō Kamui (son)
  • Romantic interests: Monō Saya
  • X Tarot Card: The Tower (Volume 16)

[edit] Magami Tokiko

() (がみ) (とき) ()

Tokiko Magami, as depicted in the anime

Kamui's aunt and the nurse at Fūma and Kotori's school when Kamui returns to Tōkyō from Okinawa. Tokiko attempts to alert Kamui to the significance of his ancestry and of his role in the end of the world, however Kamui is highly skeptical of her claim to being his mother's younger sister despite her unmistakable resemblance to Tōru. After being attacked by the "men in black", Tokiko arrives at the Togakushi Shrine severely injured just in time to give birth to the second Shinken before the very eyes of Kamui and Fūma. Tokiko was apparently in contact with Nokoru and the former Rijichō of CLAMP Academy.

Tokiko makes an appearance in CLAMP's crossover work, Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE.

  • Power: kage-nie (shadow sacrifice): can protect others by acting as a shield to them from physical or even spiritual damage; kotodama (power of words): can command others to irresistibly obey her through her words
  • Relatives: Shirō Tōru / Magami Tōru (sister; deceased), Shirō Kamui (nephew)
  • Romantic interests: unknown
  • X Tarot Card: The Tower (Volume 16)

[edit] Monō Kyōgo

(もの) (), (きょう) ()

Kyōgo, as depicted in the anime

Fūma and Kotori's father, he marries Saya even though he knew that she actually was in love with Tōru and was only marrying him so that she could protect Tōru. Kyōgo is the resident priest of the fictional Togakushi Shrine. He protects the first Shinken, hidden at the Togakushi Shrine, with his life and is killed by Nataku as a result. Right before he dies, he reveals to Fūma his destiny as Kamui's twin star.

[edit] Sumeragi Hokuto

(すめらぎ) (ほく) ()

Hokuto, as depicted in the anime

Hokuto, as depicted in the anime

Hokuto was Subaru's elder twin sister in the earlier series Tokyo Babylon, an outgoing and eccentric opposite to her shy younger brother. She attempted to bring Subaru together with a kindly veterinarian named Sakurazuka Seishirō (unconcerned at their being the same gender), only to discover the older man was in fact a ruthless magical assassin, the Sakurazukamori. To save her brother she went to Seishirō and offered her life to him; when he killed her, she cast a spell upon him such that should he ever attempt to kill Subaru in the same way he had killed her, Subaru and Seishirō's positions would be reversed, and Seishirō would die instead. She became friends with Kakyō when, desperate to meet someone, he drew her into his dreams.

In the anime she continues to appear in his dreams (as a ghost) and, along with Kotori, persuades him to turn against Fūma; Kakyō enables her to cross into her brother's dreams, where she urges Subaru to rise from his catatonia and continue the fight.

  • Power: extremely weak onmyōjyutsu (though capable of some unique spells) and possible yumemi (dreamseer): can be drawn into the dreams of other yumemi.
  • Trivia Hokuto (北斗) is the Japanese name for the Big Dipper, which has seven stars; it complements her brother's name, Subaru being the Japanese name for the Pleiades (also a group of seven stars).
  • Relatives: Lady Sumeragi (grandmother), Sumeragi Subaru (fraternal twin brother), Names Unknown (parents; deceased)
  • Romantic interests: Kuzuki Kakyō

[edit] Imonoyama Nokoru

(いも) () (やま) (のこる)

The former kaichō (chairman) of the elementary level student board and current director of the famous CLAMP Academy, as well as one of the CLAMP Campus Detectives, along with Ijyūin Akira and Takamura Suō (as seen in CLAMP Campus Detectives). A child of the fabulously wealthy zaibatsu Imonoyama family (who, in fact, founded the CLAMP Academy), Nokoru has practically limitless resources at his command. He personally knew Magami Tokiko through his relative, the former Rijichō (chairperson) of CLAMP Academy, and following the events leading to Fūma's awakening as the Kamui of the Chi no Ryū, Nokoru graciously provided the Ten no Ryū housing, admitting the younger Seals (Kamui, Yuzuriha, Arashi, and Sorata) to the CLAMP Academy at the junior and senior high school levels. Nokoru does not appear in the anime, although CLAMP Academy does.

Nokoru makes several appearances in CLAMP's crossover work, Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE.

  • Power: fabulous wealth, amazing genius, the ability to sense a woman in need within a two kilometre radius of his current position, the ability to (usually) ditch Suō and procrastinate from doing his paperwork almost endlessly
  • Trivia: Tanaka Yoshiki was originally considering naming Ryūdō Amaru, the youngest of the Ryūdō brothers in Sōryūden, Nokoru. However, he decided against it. Nokoru's name, and the names of his two confirmed older brothers, are a nod to Tanaka from CLAMP.
  • Relatives: "Rijichō" (unknown . . . the former rijichō of CLAMP Campus is most certainly closely related to Nokoru, but it's unknown as to whether she's his mother, his aunt, his cousin, or perhaps even a much older sister), Imonoyama Owaru (brother), Imonoyama Tsuzuku (brother)
  • Romantic interests: all women everywhere

[edit] Takamura Suō

(たか) (むら) () (おう)

The former secretary of the elementary level student board of CLAMP Academy and currently the personal bodyguard of Imonoyama Nokoru. A child of the Takamura family, infamous for their prodigious skills in ninjutsu. Suō does not appear in the anime.

Suoh makes several appearances in CLAMP's crossover work, Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE.

  • Power: ridiculous strength, agility, and stamina, training in just about every discipline of martial arts imaginable, the ability to (sometimes) force Nokoru to do his paperwork
  • Relatives: Name Unknown (mother), Takamura Kōji (cousin)
  • Romantic interests: Azuya Nagisa

[edit] Ijyūin Akira

() (じゅう) (いん) (あきら)

The former treasurer of the elementary level student board of CLAMP Academy and currently working for Imonoyama Nokoru (presumably as an accountant, and possibly his personal chef on the side). Strangely enough, Akira has two mothers, who are later revealed to be sisters. Also, Akira is secretly the infamous thief 20 Mensō (20 Faces). He's married to his childhood sweetheart, Utako. Akira does not appear in the anime.

Akira makes several appearances in CLAMP's crossover work, Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE.

  • Power: ability to do insane calculations on a simple abacus, unrivaled cooking talent, ability to steal . . . just about anything
  • Relatives: "Mother A" and "Mother B" (mothers), "Twenty Faces" (father), Akechi Shigetaka (uncle)
  • Romantic interests: Ōkawa Utako

[edit] Inuki

(いぬ) ()

A companion inugami (dog-spirit) created specially for Nekoi Yuzuriha in the form of a Japanese wolfhound, which only magically-gifted people can see. Inuki is more intelligent than ordinary dogs, and fiercely loyal to his mistress; he is capable of transforming into whatever she desires. He is killed by Satsuki, but then reborn during a fight between Yuzuriha, Kamui, and Fūma.

Inuki makes several appearances in CLAMP's crossover work, Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE. A wolf in CLAMP's series Shirahime-Syo: Snow Goddess Tales was also named Inuki.

  • Power: can take on any form which Yuzuriha wishes him to, usually a tsurugi (a Chinese-syle, straight-bladed double-edged sword), but also occasionally a shield.
  • X Tarot Card: The Strength (Volume 8)

[edit] Kanoe

(かのえ)

Kanoe as seen in the movie
Kanoe as seen in the movie

Princess Hinoto's younger sister, who supports the Dragons of Earth mainly to spite her (although, in the motion picture and the manga, it seems that her motivations are more out of love for Hinoto, wishing to free her from her limitations as a dreamseer). She can enter and leave dreams like Hinoto and Kakyō, but cannot see the future unaided. She works as a secretary in the Tōkyō Metropolitan Government Building for the Governor of Tōkyō.

  • Power: can move into the dreams of other dreamseers, can also communicate with other dreamseers
  • Relatives: Hinoto (sister)
  • Romantic interests: Kigai Yūto
  • X Tarot Card: The Empress (Volume 3)

[edit] Sakurazuka Setsuka

(さくら) (づか) (せつ) ()

Seishirō's mother and the Sakurazukamori who immediately preceded Seishirō. Setsuka and Seishirō loved each other very much (what is suggested to be in a borderline-incestuous manner, more obvious in the manga and the CD-dramas—it's a canon fact that Setsuka kissed Seishirō on the lips as a child at least once, and Seishirō kissed her when she was dying in his arms), and being as such, Setsuka allowed for Seishirō to kill her in order that he should become the next Sakurazukamori. Before dying, Setsuka reminds Seishirō (much in the same way that Hokuto did years later) that even he is not beyond love's reach; when he says this can't be, she tells him in her last breath that she used to think like that too until she gave birth to him.

[edit] The Beast

(ビースト)

The Beast as seen in the anime
The Beast as seen in the anime

A gigantic supercomputer held in cold storage beneath the Tōkyō Tochōsha, and commanded by Yatōji Satsuki, who interfaces through cables directly inserted into her skin. The Beast is an extremely powerful machine, capable of hacking into networked computers effortlessly and controlling the multitude of cables that run through Tōkyō. In the anime it is implied that the Beast was built on Kanoe's orders—finding the resources necessary to construct such a computer would have been facile for the secretary of the governor of Tōkyō—as both a tool and an enticement for Satsuki to join the Dragons of Earth. In the original manga, however, it was built to Satsuki's specifications after she joined the group.

The Beast is at least quasisentient and, despite having no dialogue, seems to express itself through a variety of gestures, most notably watching Satsuki through security cameras when she is absent. Although the Beast is a machine, it appears to fall in love with Satsuki, and apparently grows jealous when Satsuki starts showing affection for Yūto. In the movie and the anime series, this jealousy causes the Beast to murder Satsuki, infesting her entire body with cables so deeply that they bulge beneath her skin, as well as refusing to aid Yūto, leading to his death.

The Beast features on its side the number 666, the Biblical Number of the Beast.

  • Power: ability to hack into just about any computer, ability to control cables all across Tōkyō
While the Beast's name is written with the kanji character 獣 (which would normally be pronounced as "kemono"), the furigana employed dictates that the Beast's name is to be pronounced as "biisuto", the rōmaji phonetization of the English word "beast".
