[edit] Overview
The X1 Enterprise Client helps users find, preview and act on content stored on a desktop PC and in shared network file locations. The X1 interface is basically a single window that enable users to see everything that they have access to across an enterprise network, including email, documents and files.
X1 can search indexed files as fast as the user can type. The search results list narrows as each letter of the search term is typed. Files/documents that match the search criteria are listed in the left pane of the interface and a preview of the file or email is displayed in the right pane. X1 searches many file types, including files, email, and Outlook contacts/calendar/tasks.
History
X1 Enterprise Client was built to help users easily search emails, files and more. Beta versions of the product were originally released in 2002 under the product name Find at [1]. To build the early versions of Find/X1, Bill Gross of Idealab reassembled the team that developed the original Magellan software. The product was first sold and the company (and product) name changed to X1 Technologies, Inc. in 2003 (the company remains an Idealab operating company). The original desktop search product was licensed to tens of thousands of users, mostly purchased at $100 or $75 through the company's website. There is now a free version of the client available.
Free versus Enterprise
As with Google Desktop or Microsoft’s Windows Desktop Search, anyone can download the free version of the X1 Enterprise Client. The download includes a Yahoo! toolbar for searching the web from X1.
The Enterprise Deployment Kit, includes a central tool to configure the client and deploy it to end users. It also has a limited trial of the server-side piece, the X1 Enterprise Server. Since it is a software solution, rather than an appliance-based solution, IT groups can control who can search what.
[edit] Details
Productivity
X1 reduces the time spent hunting for email, files and documents and eliminates time spent reworking or recreating existing files.
X1's preview pane shows selected results in their native format, with search keywords highlighted.
X1 searches all email folders and .PST email archives, making it easy to find email regardless of where it was stored (or misfiled). The “Email” tab shows email located all folders or PSTs in one integrated view.
Security
The X1 Enterprise Client maps to Windows Authentication so that end users can only access what they have permission to see. The current free version locks out network folders. To get access to search network folders requires intervention from a network administrator. This can slow down end users who want to search across all authorized folders, but at the same time, it boosts security.
Integrated Local/Network Search Results
When deployed as part of an enterprise-scale solution, the interface combines the search results from the PC-based index along with the results from the server-side indexes. This means that once the client is pointed at a file location and indexes it, the user doesn’t have to know where a file is located in order to find it, regardless of the location or application.
Real-time Indexing of Email & Files
X1 is automatically updates its index as email arrives or is moved or deleted. The index also updates automatically as files and documents are moved, deleted, or edited.
Within X1, many email functions such as Reply, Forward, and Delete can also be performed.
Indexes Outlook Attachments, Contacts, Calendar and Task Entries
Beyond indexing email and files, the X1 Enterprise Client also indexes Attachments, Contacts, and now Calendar and Task entries.
UI Features
Popular searches can be saved as "Saved Searches" (like bookmarks) or "Favorite Searches" (that appear as tabs in the UI). Saved searches can also be emailed to other users.
As with most Microsoft Windows applications, X1 supports drag and drop of search results into emails, file folders or the desktop.
