X-stream

The X-Stream Network was the UK's first free ISP. Founded in Toronto, Canada by Canadian brothers Christopher Sukornyk and Gregory Sukornyk, X-Stream launched its first free service in the UK on March 8, 1998. It is commonly regarded as the World's first successful free ISP, as earlier experiments with free Internet access were unsuccessful.
X-Stream became the third largest ISP in the United Kingdom within 12 months of its launch, competing head on with the likes of AOL and Freeserve, and started an international surge of copycat ISPs. Following its UK success, X-Stream quickly launched its free service in The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The Sukornyk brothers also helped to launch livedoor, Japan's first free ISP.
X-Stream was acquired by leading French ISP LibertySurf in March 2000 for US$75MM, which floated on the Paris Bourse shortly thereafter raising in excess of 500MM Euros. LibertySurf was backed by Bernard Arnault (LVMH) and Kingfisher, a leading UK retail group. LibertySurf in turn was acquired by Tiscali.
