U. S. Cavalry soldiers during the Battle of Beecher Island, Arikaree River, Colorado, 1868. An officer hands a wounded soldier a drink of water as another man sips from a pool. A third prepares to fire his rifle. The battle was waged against Native Americans (Cheyenne) who had surrounded the island.
