[edit] History

WXBX was formerly a radio station located in Buffalo, New York that operated on a frequency of 1400 kHz on the AM dial. Also known as 14X, "The X", and "Rebel Radio", it was on the air for exactly one year, from September 1, 1990 to September 1, 1991, at which point the staff was fired and the frequency began simulcasting sister station WUFX (which would become WEDG). In 1993 the call letters changed to WWWS, further cementing its disapearance.

As 14X, WXBX broadcast a mix of hard rock and heavy metal just before Grunge music began to dominate the airwaves. One of its slogans was "Too Loud for FM," an appropriate moniker considering the station was broadcasting bands like Metallica before Heavy Metal had become more mainstream. Bands such as Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Danzig, Ted Nugent and Dio saw heavy airplay, along with Canadian rockers such as Rush.

Ted Shredd, the afternoon drive DJ on 14X, would go on to work at 103.3 The Edge as part of the popular "Shredd and Ragan" show.

The first song broadcast on 14X was "I Heard It On The X" by ZZ Top at 2pm on 9/1/90 by Ted Shredd.

Despite the station being shut down after exactly 1 year of broadcasting, the staff had an anniversary party at Sinbad's Nightclub with the Bullet Boys.

The official station vehicle was a 1966 Cadillac Hearse.
