[edit] History
The station first took to the air on October 15, 1965, under the callisign of WEMT-TV. The current call letters, WVII-TV, were adopted in 1976. WVII is the only television station in Bangor to have never switched its network affiliation. It is also one of only two stations in Bangor to broadcast in Stereo.
In 2000, Rockfleet made its first venture into UHF broadcasting, leasing channel 30, a former secondary PBS station. The station changed its call letters to WCKD and network affiliation to UPN. In 2003, after an attempt to affiliate WCKD with FOX failed, Rockfleet purchased a new station. The station was assigned the call letters of WFVX-LP, was set up to broadcast on channel 22, and recieved the FOX affiliation.
[edit] Programming
WVII has always had local newscasts, but they have never had the same level of success as the two older stations in the market, WABI and WLBZ. WVII currently airs newscasts, under the branding of ABC 7 News, weekdays at 6 and 11 PM as well as morning news cut-ins during the weekday edition of Good Morning America. Until major upgrades in recent years, WVII was frequently derided for having cheap production values, especially among residents of the Canadian Maritimes where WVII was carried on cable until the early 1990s. In 2002, the station cut its weather department, and enlisted the services of AccuWeather, which is based in State College, Pennsylvania. Meteorologist Jim Kosek is the primary on-air talent for WVII and was awarded Best Weathercast by the Maine Association of Broadcasters in 2005, proving that it was irrelevant where the weather services originate. It should be noted that the award was based on talent, rather than accuracy. Until recently, WVII's claim to fame has been its sports department, which in the past has featured the hard-working group of Nate Long, Ryan Welch, and Elgin Traylor followed by the very amusing and talented tandem of Ted Lombardi and Tim Baier. NESN's Eric Frede was once the sports director at WVII. In mid-October of 2006, WVII announced that the 10 PM newscast on WFVX and the 11 PM newscast on WVII would be recorded in advance, with only the sports segment live.
