[edit] Modern Writtle
The college has diversified during the late 90’s to meet the changing demands of new students. More recent departments include Business and Leisure Management, Design and Equine studies with major investment in IT and science facilities, boasting free college network access to every student resident on campus. These additions come at a loss however as the college has now dropped it's long running programme in engineering after application numbers dwindled. The college has recently built a new Lecture Theatre complex, numerous halls of residence and refurbished its Recreation Centre, including its student venue titled "The Baa and Chef".
The diversification process has not always gone to plan however, with considerable opposition from students and staff that the college has lost its true values. Despite this, the college continues to expand and attract significant student applications and is ever-popular with the local population.
[edit] Facilities
The college has excellent facilities considering its relative size; it has an extensive new library, major fully equipped science building and is based on a very large and beautifully landscaped estate (although recent years have seen a marginal drop in the maintenance of the estate, this is presumably a cost measure). The College is based over a number of "campuses", albeit they are (arguably) all on the single vast estate, they are a considerable distance from one another.
[edit] Social and living
The Baa and Chef, the on campus student venue, can only be described as super-equipped with its ultra modern design, selection of big-screen televisions, games and surprisingly comprehensive entertainment system. The college has an active students union, a large sports club base and is renown for having a well varied and unique social scene.
The college seems to not only attract a wide variety of students from many parts of the UK and abroad but also manages to keep them happy, the feeling on the main campus is positive and fresh.
[edit] The "new" face of Writtle
The college hopes to become an independent University College and receive a Royal Charter within the next decade. Writtle College degrees are presently validated by the University of Essex.
