Written on the Wind is a 1956 melodrama film starring Rock Hudson and Lauren Bacall, and directed by Douglas Sirk. The title song has become famous in its own right; it was written by Sammy Cahn and Victor Young and is sung by The Four Aces during the opening credits.
[edit] Synopsis
The storyline revolves around the self-destructive Hadley family, with its main focus on the more interesting characters of dipso-nymphomaniac daughter, Marylee (Dorothy Malone), and alcoholic and impotent son Kyle (Robert Stack) of Texas oil baron Jasper (Robert Keith). Spoiled rotten by their inherited wealth and crippled by their personal demons, neither is capable of maintaining a successful personal relationship.
[edit] Awards and nominations
- Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (nominated) - Robert Stack
- Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (won) - Dorothy Malone
- Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress (nominated) - Dorothy Malone
Malone's Academy Award, which came after a long string of secondary roles in B movies finally gave her cachet in the film industry. Many consider this to be Stack's best performance.[citation needed]
