Writers & Books, Rochester's community literary center, inspires and instructs over 25,000 people each year through a wide array of offerings in nearly every literary genre.



Founded by Joe Flaherty, Writers & Books is considered one of the largest and finest community literary centers in the United States. In 2006, Writers & Books celebrates 25 years of creating and nurturing a literary community in which reading and writing play a major role in people's lives. Writers & Books has presented If All of Rochester Read the Same Book, one of the largest community-wide reading programs in the U.S. since 2001.

In addition, Writers & Books offers
• over 200 writing classes and workshops for youth, adults and seniors
• over 75 readings and talks annually
• Residencies at the Gell Center of the Finger Lakes
• Annual Regional Playwriting Festivals and contests with GEVA Theater
• College and High School Internships

Writers & Books has been recognized over the years through being:
• Named "Arts Organization of the Year" from the Arts and Cultural Council of Greater Rochester (2002)
• Awarded the highest level of funding given any literary center in the U.S. by the Lila Wallace - Reader's Digest Fund, this country's largest private arts funder (1998)
• Given the “Arts Award” from the Rochester Chamber of Commerce (1997)
• Named “A Friend of the Liberal Arts in the Rochester Community” by The Rochester Institute of Technology's College of Liberal Arts (1991)
• Cited for "Significant Contributions to the Rochester Reading. Scene," by The Rochester Bibliophile Society (1989)
• Cited for "Significant Contributions to the Arts in Rochester," by Arts for Greater Rochester (1988)
• Named one of New York State's "Primary Arts Organizations" by the New York State Council on the Arts—a designation given to organizations that have been judged to "make a substantial contribution to the state's cultural life.”
