[edit] History
WPTD began in 1972 as WOET-TV operated by the Ohio Educational Broadcasting Network Commission (OEB). Prior to that, Channel 16 was occupied by an independent commercial station, WKTR-TV owned by Kitty Hawk Television Corporation licensed to Kettering, Ohio when it first signed on in April of 1967 before it abruptly went silent in 1970. It returned to the air briefly in 1971 but went dark again that same year. WPTD's sister station, WPTO, began in 1959 as WMUB-TV, which was operated by Miami University.
The stations joined forces in 1975 under the banner of University Regional Broadcasting, a consortium of Miami, Wright State and Central State universities. WMUB-TV was the primary station for a year until 1976, when WOET became the primary station. In 1977, the stations were transferred to the community-owned Greater Dayton Public Television and received their current calls. The corporate name became the ThinkTV Network in 1998, though the legal name remained Greater Dayton Public Television.
