Template:WPBeatles
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
About the template
This template adds article talk pages, category talk pages, template talk pages, etc (whatever it is placed on) to Category:WikiProject The Beatles articles. It is also used to track article classifications and presents readers with a current "to do" list.
Please be very careful when editing this template if you don't understand MediaWiki Parser Functions. This template is now very complicated and could easily be broken. (Note that you may find m:Magic_words and m:ParserFunctions very helpful in understanding what this does... consider consulting with User:Kingboyk or User:Lar before making any changes, please)
The usage instructions are now stored in a separate page - Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles/Project banner - and may be safely edited by any project member.
Usage
Please note: This template should be transcluded ({{WPBeatles}}) and not substituted (subst) because it employs conditional code. Transclusion also allows easy updating of all the Project's talk pages without having to edit hundreds of pages.
A simple way to use the template is to copy the following onto the talk page, and then optionally remove the unnecessary lines. If any further help is needed, please ask at WPT:TB or ask User:Kingboyk or User:Lar.
{{WPBeatles |living = |class = |importance = |apple = |john = |paul = |george = |ringo = |epstein = |martin = |also-beatles = |display = |album = |song = |musician = |arts = |album-importance = |bio-importance = |song-importance = |attention = |needs-infobox = }}
Parameters
- living: Answer yes if the subject is a living person, no if is a dead person; Answer NA or remove the line if the article is not a biography. Articles tagged yes get a living persons bio warning and are placed in Category:Biography articles of living people.
- class: Options are FA, A, GA, B, Start, Stub, Dab (disambiguation page), Template, Cat (category), Merge, MergeDel (merge or delete), Merged, AFD (deletion candidate), NA (no class, e.g. a WikiProject page). If blank, this will default as Unassessed. Descriptions of the options can be found at WP:TBA#Article progress grading scheme.
- importance: Top, High, Mid, Low. If blank, this will default as Unknown importance. Descriptions of the options can be found at WP:TBA#Article importance grading scheme.
- apple, john, paul, george, ringo, epstein, martin: Answer yes to any of these if the article is about specifically Apple Corps/Apple Records, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Brian Epstein/NEMS, or George Martin. Otherwise, remove. Setting any of these to yes will place the article in the appropriate subtopic's assessment category. The Mathbot-created worklists can be viewed at the following locations:
- Apple: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- John: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- Paul: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- George: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- Ringo: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- G Martin: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- B Epstein: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- also-beatles: If you've answered yes in any of the above (john, paul, apple, etc) and the subject is also relevant to The Beatles as a group answer yes. Otherwise, remove the line. Examples: The article Paul McCartney is most certainly relevant to The Beatles, so answer yes. Flowers in the Dirt is a post-Beatles Macca album, answer no or remove the line.
- The Beatles: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- musician=yes If yes, the article is added to the assessment categories belonging to WikiProject Musicians.
- arts=yes If yes, the article is added to the categories belonging to the Arts and entertainment workgroup. Don't set musician and arts to yes; musician is a higher level.
- display: a text string to display before "-related" in the template text. (martin=yes forces the template to display "George Martin-related"; set display=Beatles to force it back to "Beatles-related") Remove this parameter if not setting it. An empty display=parameter doesn't work. Wikilinks may be included, for example: display=[[Wings (band)|Wings]]
- album: Answer yes if the subject is an album. This displays a message that the article is within the scope of WikiProject Albums, and adds it to the categories Category:WikiProject Albums articles, Category:Album articles by quality, and Category:Album articles by importance. Once again, this allows our articles to be assessed for another WikiProject too.
- Albums: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- song: Answer yes if the subject is a song. Displays a message that the article is within the scope of WikiProject Songs, and adds it to the categories Category:WikiProject Song articles and Category:Song articles by quality.
- Songs: (Index · Statistics · Log).
- album-importance, song-importance: these are the importance levels of this article to the Album and Song WikiProjects. It's ok to delete these lines if you're not totally confident in how to use the template. WikiProject Songs don't currently assess importance, so this parameter is ignored.
- bio-importance: Importance to WikiProject Musicians or the Arts and entertainment workgroup. Has no affect if neither musician= or arts= are yes.
- attention: Answer yes if the page needs immediate attention, otherwise remove this line. If yes a banner message is displayed and the article is placed in Category:WikiProject The Beatles articles needing attention (and Category:Biography articles needing attention if a biography).
- needs-infobox: Answer yes if the article lacks an infobox, otherwise remove this line. This places the article in Category:WikiProject The Beatles articles needing infoboxes. If the article is about an album, it also displays the {{Needsinfobox}} template and places the article in Category:Needs album infobox. If the article is about a song, a banner is displayed and the article is placed in Category:Articles in need of Song Infoboxes. If the article is a biography, it is placed in Category:Biography articles needing infoboxes.
Example 1: basic
{{WPBeatles}}
For main space articles which have not yet been assessed, simply use {{WPBeatles}}. This default places the article in Category:Unassessed Beatles articles and Category:Unassessed-importance Beatles articles, and doesn't change the wording of the template in any way.
Example 2: full
Todo: Some examples (with named articles) of how to use the new template. Or are folks happy with the above instructions?
