Introduction
Worsthorne is a splendid rural village, located on the outskirts of the East-Lancashire town, Burnley; it has good links with the M65 and excellent public transport services.
Pre 1950
Worsthorne was originally the name of a vast farm which covered the area known as this today, and was owned by the Worsley family. The area slowly began to develop into a small community, with the construction of a C. of E. Church, and a public house.
1960's & 1970's
The 1960's saw a rise in housing areas, with many of the old "Worsley Farm" barns being converted into houses. As the population of the "Worsley Farm" surrounding area increased, Burnley council decided to name this anonymous place as Worsthorne. The "Wors" derives from the infamous farming family, and the "thorne" was adjoined to this due to the copious number of thorn-bushes in the area. Several large housing-estates were erected in the new village of Worsthorne, and it became a thriving community of the parish of Burnley.
1970's - 2000
In this time a medium-sized primary school was built, as were two more public houses. Numerous more houses were added to the village, and the village became a well-known area in Burnley.
Post 2000
The beginning of the new millenium saw the BNP party being elected in the Worsthorne area, and the village gained much publicity in both local and national press for this.
