Wormhole physics (Stargate)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As portrayed in the fictional universe of Stargate, wormhole physics is a field of study that describes the functioning of Stargates and wormholes. It was pioneered by Samantha Carter. In the episode "Upgrades", possessing super-human abilities Samantha Carter wrote an entire book on the subject, claiming she had been wanting to write it for a long time previously but had never been able to find the time as it was such an incredibly complex subject.
[edit] Known statements
- A wormhole can only be maintained for 38 minutes (Under normal circumstances).
- Matter less than three μm from the event horizon will not reintergrate through a wormhole.
- Matter can only pass one way through a wormhole.
- Energy can pass through in either direction.
- Energy to maintain an established wormhole can come from either side.
- Substantial gravitational force can pass through a wormhole from either side.
- Although gate travel seems instant to the traveler, matter transmission between stargates in the same galaxy takes on average 0.3 seconds. ("Ripple Effect").
- A large surge of energy to an active Stargate can cause the wormhole to jump from the recieving Stargate to the next nearest one in line. ("Solitudes").
- An event horizon can be created in the stargate without a wormhole. ("48 Hours").
- When traveling from one gate to another, solar flares can redirect the wormhole from a gate to the same gate in another time period. ("1969" and "2010").
