The competition took place at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield between the 18th April to the 4th May 1998. The total prize money was £1,148,000 with £230,000 going to the winner. David Gray, Quinten Hann and Matthew Stevens all made their Crucible debuts this year.

Stephen Hendry lost in Round 1 in this year. It was the first time since his debut in 1986 that he lost in the last 32 and it was also the first quarter-final stage not to feature Hendry since 1988.
