The World Snooker Championship was revived after a six year absence in 1964 in which 1957 World Champion John Pulman played challenge matches.

In 1965, Rex Williams made a break of 142 during his match with John Pulman. A new record which would last until 1979 when Bill Werbeniuk equalled his break.
Fred Van Rensburg became the first South African to play in the championship in the third 1965 match. He never played in a championship again.
Eddie Charlton first World Championship match was the 1968 challenge in which he lost 39-34 to John Pulman. He never played again until 1973
